A clash broke out between students of Dhaka University (DU) and Dhaka College around 1 AM on Sunday night (October 12). Both sides engaged in chasing each other with sticks, turning the New Market–Nilkhet area into a battleground. Several loud explosions were also reportedly heard during the incident.
The confrontation escalated into brick-throwing, creating panic among local residents and business owners. Leaders from the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), including Vice President Sadik Kayem, rushed to the scene to try and calm the situation.
A large number of police personnel were deployed in the Nilkhet and New Market areas to bring the situation under control.
According to AC Mohammad Jahangir of DMP’s New Market Zone, the clash was sparked by a dispute over setting up a street shop near Shahnewaz Hall of Dhaka University. He stated that both groups were dispersed by law enforcement and that an investigation is underway.
