Tensions flared at the south plaza of the National Parliament as clashes broke out between members of the “July Fighters” movement and police. Law enforcement used tear gas and batons to disperse demonstrators, leading to a chaotic scene in the capital. In response, the July Fighters have announced a nationwide highway blockade for Sunday, October 19, in protest of the incident.

In a statement on Friday (October 17), Masud Rana Sourav, chief organizer of the July Fighters Parliament, said the blockade will take place in every district from 2 PM to 5 PM.

“We were attacked without provocation,” Sourav said. “This movement is not just about us—it’s about justice, recognition, and the blood we’ve already shed. We call upon the public to stand with us during this blockade.”

The unrest began earlier that morning when demonstrators gathered in front of Gate 12 of the National Parliament under the banner of “Families of July Martyrs and Injured Fighters.” At one point, they breached the gate and entered the premises, chanting slogans and occupying seats designated for guests near the main stage.

Tensions escalated when police attempted to remove the protesters. Clashes ensued, during which the demonstrators reportedly set fires and vandalized property in several areas around the Parliament complex. In an effort to regain control, police and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) personnel used sound grenades and baton charges to disperse the crowd.

The area was soon placed under heavy security, with law enforcement cordoning off the entire Parliament premises. Despite efforts to contain the situation, sporadic unrest continued into the afternoon.

In light of these events, the July Fighters have declared their intention to continue their movement and have urged people across the country to join their upcoming blockade.
