Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is set to begin a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom today, Monday, June 9. The UK government has formally designated the visit as an official state visit.
As part of the trip, Dr. Yunus is scheduled to meet King Charles III in a courtesy call at Buckingham Palace on June 12. Later that day, he will receive the prestigious King Charles Harmony Award from the monarch at St. James’s Palace.
On June 11, Dr. Yunus will hold a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. He is also expected to participate in a dialogue organized by the renowned UK-based policy institute, Chatham House.
Details of the visit were announced during a press briefing held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 4.
The Government of Bangladesh has stated that a key focus of the visit will be the recovery of funds allegedly laundered abroad. Additionally, the trip is seen as a strategic move to secure greater international support for Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic process.
Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddiqui noted, “This visit will deepen the historic friendship between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, strengthen economic ties, and enhance Bangladesh’s position on the global stage. It will also play a crucial role in garnering international support for our democratic journey.”
