Argentine forward Julián Álvarez has apologised to Atlético Madrid supporters for controversial comments he made during the 2026 World Cup. Acknowledging the fans’ frustration, the striker admitted that both the way he expressed himself and the timing of his remarks were wrong.
Álvarez was the hero in Atlético Madrid’s 1–0 victory over Deportivo, scoring the decisive goal to secure all three points for his team. Speaking to Movistar after the match, the forward discussed his performance and addressed the controversy, offering an apology to the club’s supporters.
“I want to apologise to the fans for the statements I made during the World Cup. The way I said things was wrong, and the timing was not right either. Most importantly, I understand why people are upset. If I were a fan myself, I would be angry too. Especially considering how they have supported me and stood by me over the years, it is understandable that they feel frustrated,” Álvarez said.
The controversy surrounding his comments emerged during the transfer window, sparking discussions about his relationship with Atlético Madrid. His remarks drew criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase, prompting questions about the situation.
However, Álvarez also expressed gratitude for the support and understanding he has received from supporters in recent weeks.
“The fans have shown me a lot of kindness recently, and I am genuinely grateful to them for that. Now, I need to focus on my work and continue trying to improve myself. I am also thankful for the support the entire team has given me during this period,” he added.
The Argentine forward believes that feeling positive off the pitch can also influence his performances on it. He said he was feeling good and remained determined to fight for the team’s objectives.
“When things are going well in your life, it shows on the pitch too. Everything has an impact. I am feeling good and ready to fight for everything,” Álvarez said.
With his decisive goal against Deportivo and his public apology, Álvarez will now look to put the controversy behind him and concentrate on helping Atlético Madrid achieve their goals.
